If Perth has a reputation for being laid-back, nowhere is this more evident than in Fremantle. The vibe in this port city is chilled, and it is probably the best place in Perth for both spending the day and going out on weekends.
Freo is one of the most vibrant waterfronts in Perth, with restaurants, bars and fish and chips available at the bay. South Beach and Bathers Beach are popular shores to relax on, while the Cappuccino Strip of South Terrace is a perfect example of Italian influence and fantastic coffee. Wander down the terrace to the famous Fremantle Markets to shop for handmade goods, fresh produce, desserts and multicultural food stalls. The markets have been operational since 1897 and are open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until 9pm.
At night, the restaurant and bar scene is fantastic. Traditionally, Fremantle was all about seafood, Italian restaurants, cool cafes and 150-year-old pubs with exceptional live music. More recently, offerings have expanded to include some of the best restaurants in Perth, with virtually every style and cuisine type imaginable. Beloved chain eateries are shoulder to shoulder with casual dining and even some high-end locations.
The nightlife is just as exciting, with the iconic Metropolis refurbishment competing against the likes of HUGOS Club, Benny’s Yard, and the typical hotel pubs like The National and Federal hotels. Locals plan their nights' bar hopping and easily end their nights with traditional kebabs or souvlaki, all on the main drag.
For families, in addition to being the historic centre of Perth, Freo is also home to three of the best museums in the city. The Maritime Museum is the second largest in Perth and has a great selection of permanent and seasonal exhibitions, which can all be topped off by a pint and pizza at the popular Gage Roads Brewery. A ten-minute walk away is the Shipwrecks Museum, a much smaller museum than its maritime counterpart, but it is interesting nonetheless, notably the reconstructed Batavia wreck. A five-minute drive from there is the Army Museum of Western Australia, the main military museum in Perth, home to a collection of military vehicles, including tanks and four Victoria Crosses.
